Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge is located near Bled and close to the village Spodnje Gorje. The gorge is carved by the Radovna River and is around 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) long. At some parts it reaches depths of up to 250 meters. It is a popular destination among tourists but still worth a visit. The Gorge is one of the best cultural and natural highlights in Bled.
Discovery and early history
Vintgar Gorge was relatively unknown until the late 19th century. While the gorge itself had undoubtedly existed for centuries, it wasn’t until 1891 that it became widely known and accessible to the public. The first recorded mention of Vintgar Gorge dates back to the early 19th century, but it remained largely a local secret until its discovery by a group of Slovene naturalists and enthusiasts.
In 1891, the gorge was formally explored and opened to the public by the local authorities. This was largely thanks to the initiative of the well-known Bled physician, Dr. Aljaž Mašelj. He and his colleagues saw the potential for tourism in this hidden natural wonder. Dr. Mašelj was active in the development of the gorge into a tourist destination by helping to build the first wooden bridges and walking paths.
Development as a tourist attraction
In the early 1890s wooden boardwalks were constructed along the river. A series of bridges were built over the turbulent water. The walkways provided a secure path that allowed tourists to walk through the gorge and it’s features such as the crystal-clear pools, waterfalls, and limestone cliffs. This development increased the attraction of Vintgar Gorge and made it one of the first tourist destinations in Slovenia. The Vintgar Gorge was an essential part of the area’s tourism infrastructure in the 19th and 20th century. Visitors from across Europe came to admire the beauty of the gorge. The gorge was still somewhat of a hidden gem at the time.
Post-War period and modern development
After World War II the Vintgar Gorge deteriorated from neglect. The wooden walkways weakened over time. In the 1980s and 1990s, efforts were made to restore and preserve the area. The gorge was carefully refurbished with modern materials to ensure the safety of visitors while maintaining its natural beauty. The wooden walkways were replaced with more durable ones, and additional bridges were added to improve accessibility and the overall experience for tourists.
Vintgar Gorge in the present
The Vintgar Gorge is now an essential part of the Bled regional tourism. It has been equipped with well-maintained pathways, informational signs, and safety measures to ensure that visitors can fully appreciate the natural beauty without disturbing the ecosystem. The gorge’s highlights include the Šum Waterfall. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful walk through the gorge, admiring the clear blue water and the surrounding landscape.

History of Saint Catherine church

The church underwent a major reconstruction in the 16th century, with large changes to its interior and the addition of new artistic elements. It was during this period that the church was changed into a more prominent place of worship for the local community, which was predominantly Roman Catholic.
In the 18th century, the church was further renovated, and its distinctive baroque-style interior was added. This was a time of significant religious and architectural development across Slovenia, and Saint Catherine Church benefited from the growing popularity of baroque art.
