Ban Man Da Museum

Ban Man Da means Mother’s Home or Mother Land. It’s a small museum of the local village behind the Pha Thok Caves. The Ban Man Da museum is a small but impressive display of bomb shells, pieces of bombs and personal items that were lost or left behind by soldiers. From 1964  to 1973 the US Military dropped bombs in Laos to cut off the supply routes to Vietnam. Every eight minutes the United States had bombs dropped in Laos. It is until this day the most heaviest bombed country in history.

You can go for stroll around the rice fields and gardens. Via an impressive local made bamboo bridge you can visit the caves where locals used to life to hide for the bombings. During the day they lived in the caves. At night time the villagers came out of the caves to get food and work on the rice fields. This was a very dangerous situation because at night the unexploded bombs were difficult to see. The money that is spend here or donated is invested back into the maintenance of the museum, the gardens, rice fields and to preservation of the cultural heritage.
