I hiked the stunning north shore trail of Wolfgangsee. I started in the charming lakeside village of Sankt Gilgen and ending in the peaceful town of Strobl. It instantly became one of my favourite hikes in Austria. The path goes along the turquoise waters of the lake, including breathtaking views of the Salzkammergut mountains at every turn. As I walked through shady forests, open meadows, and quiet shoreline paths, I discovered hidden swimming spots, scenic viewpoints, and traditional Austrian cafés perfect for a mid-hike break. This Sankt Gilgen to Strobl hike is a must for anyone looking to combine nature, culture, and the serene beauty of the Wolfgangsee in one unforgettable day.

The well-marked route is easy to follow, and I appreciated that there are plenty of spots to rest and take in the views. Whether you’re hiking solo, with friends, or family, this trail has a balanced mix of adventure and relaxation.

Swimming & picnic spots along the trail

How to get to Sankt Gilgen

Getting to Sankt Gilgen was surprisingly easy, which made starting the hike stress-free. I took the scenic bus ride from Salzburg, passing rolling hills and glimpses of sparkling lakes along the way. Another option is to get here by car.

Getting to Sankt Gilgen by car

If you’re driving, Sankt Gilgen is about a 30-minute journey from Salzburg via the B158 road. You will enjoy the beautiful lake and mountain views along the way. From Vienna, the drive takes around 3.5 hours, and from Munich, it’s about 2.5 hours. Once you arrive, there are several parking options, including a large paid parking lot near the Zwölferhorn cable car station and smaller lots close to the lake promenade. Getting to Sankt Gilgen by bus

From Salzburg, regular buses (line 150) depart from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) and take around 50 minutes to reach Sankt Gilgen. From Vienna, you can take a train to Salzburg or Bad Ischl and connect by bus. Travellers coming from Munich can take a train to Salzburg and then continue on the same bus line. Buses are clean, reliable, and affordable, making them a convenient choice for those who prefer not to drive.

Best time to visit

The best time to hike along the Wolfgangsee north shore is between late spring and early autumn. I visited in September when the weather was warm and the trails were dry. From May to September, wildflowers bloom and the lake invites you for a refreshing swim at one of the many quiet bays along the way. I enjoyed visiting in early autumn when the surrounding forests turn golden, creating a stunning contrast with the blue water. Winters can be peaceful but the trail may be snowy or icy, so I recommend checking conditions if you plan a hike outside the warmer months.

At the trail’s end in Strobl, you have many lakeside restaurants to relax and enjoy the scenery. That said, especially on warm days, I always recommend bringing enough water and some snacks with you, as parts of the trail have limited places to refill or buy refreshments.
