30 Pictures of historical Rome

Check out the 30 pictures of historical Rome I’ve selected and become inspired to visit the city someday. The Roman Empire was one of the largest empires in the ancient world. Throughout the decades they built impressive large monuments, public facilities, palaces, churches and other buildings. A few famous examples are the Colosseum, Pantheon, Roman Forum and many medieval structures like Sint Peter’s Basilica and Square.

Read the paragraph below to read about the mythological story of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.

Founders of Rome: Romulus and Remus

The twin brothers Romulus and Remus are the founders of the city of Rome. The mythological story starts when their father left the babies in a basket on the river Tiber. He was afraid his sons would kill him for the throne. The king thought the boys would die soon in the Tiber. But the boys were found by a female wolf. The wolf cared for them and protected them. Later on a shepherd took the boys home and raised the twins.

When the boys found out where they came from, they killed the king. They were not interested in taking the throne. The two brothers preferred to built their own city. Romulus and Remus picked the spot where Rome is situated today. They were discussing which hill to start building. Romulus built a wall around Palantine Hill and Remus got jealous. Remus jumped over the wall to show how easy it was. Romulus got angry and killed Remus.

Romulus started building his own city. Rome is officially founded in 753 BC. He crowned himself king and named the city after himself. The city expanded to the seven surrounding hills and the Roman Kingdom was born. The tale takes place around 753 BC but the first written proof goes back to the late 3rd century BC.
