The city is popular by locals and tourists. Chiang Mai is situated 700km from Bangkok. In Thai, Chiang Mai means ‘New City’, and the city is founded in 1296 as the new capital of Lan Na.

Chiang Mai is a popular tourist destination. The city has a rich cultural and religious history and is famous for the arts and crafts market. Tourism is an important income for the local economy. And with the rising amount of tourists, the demand for traditional art and crafts increased. Over the years local artists enhanced their work to meet the demands.

Temples

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Chiang Mai is the city of Temples. It has 24 Buddhist temples. ‘Wat’ is Thai for temple. The most famous temple is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and located on Doi Suthep (mountain). From here you have an amazing view of the city. The temple dates back to the 14^th century and is one of the most sacred temples in northern Thailand. You have to walk up the staircase with 310 steps. The entrance is easy to recognize by the mosaic serpents.

Wat Chedi Luang

The Chedi Luang temple is a tall and ruined-style chedi temple. It is built in 1441 and the area around the stupa is amazing. The Phra Kaewh is the famous Emerald Buddha. The buddha statue used to be located in this temple before they moved it to Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok. They replaced the Emerald buddha with a jade replica to celebrate the 600^th anniversary of the Chedi.

Wat Chiang Man

The oldest temple of Chiang Mai is built in the 13^th century. The temple Chiang Man is constructed by the city’s founder, Phaya Mengrai. King Mengrai lived here during the construction of Chiang Mai. The temples houses two important Buddha figures, the marble Phra Sila and the crystal Satang Man.

Wat Phra Singh

A typical example of Northern Thai architecture is the Wat Phra Singh. It is located in the Old City, within the walls of the city and dates back to 1345. The temple is decorated with an impressive mosaic inlay. Pilgrims visit this temple to honour Pra Singh, the Lion Buddha.
