From the iconic Pan di Zucchero sea stack to scenic hiking trails that go along rough cliffs and hidden coves, Nebida and Masua are a unique mix of natural beauty, history, and adventure for every visitor. A brief history of Nebida and Masua

The villages of Nebida and Masua are part of Sardinia’s Iglesiente mining district. This is an area that flourished between the 18^th and 20^th centuries. At this time large deposits of lead, zinc, and silver were discovered along the coast. Nebida developed as a mining settlement in the mid-1800s. It was centered around the Laveria Lamarmora, a monumental ore-washing plant built in 1897 that processed minerals before export. Masua is just a short distance away and became equally significant thanks to its port facilities.

Masua is known for the innovative sea-loading system of Porto Flavia. It was constructed in the 1920s and allowed ore to be directly loaded onto ships bound for mainland Europe. These industrial advances made the region one of Italy’s most important mining centres, attracting workers and shaping the local communities. Although the mines closed in the late 20^th century, Nebida and Masua remain living testaments to Sardinia’s industrial heritage. They are now preserved as part of the UNESCO-recognized Geomining Park of Sardinia.

Highlights in Nebida

Nebida is best known for the Belvedere di Nebida. This is a panoramic terrace overlooking the shimmering blue sea. Just below the cliffs are the striking ruins of the Laveria Lamarmora. It is a 19^th century ore-washing plant that now forms one of Sardinia’s most photogenic historic sites. Walking trails are found along the cliffs and come with spectacular views of the coast and connecting Nebida with nearby coves and beaches such as Spiaggia di Masua. The combination of industrial archaeology and natural beauty makes Nebida a must-visit stop on Sardinia’s Mining Coast.

Highlights in Masua

Masua is famous for its dramatic coastal scenery and its proximity to the Pan di Zucchero. The tallest sea stack in the Mediterranean is around 133 meters high. Adventurous people can enjoy boat trips and kayaking tours around the sea stack or relax on the sandy Spiaggia di Masua. Another unmissable highlight is Porto Flavia, an engineering masterpiece built in the 1920s to load ore directly onto ships. Today, visitors can explore the tunnels of Porto Flavia on guided tours, combining industrial history with breathtaking views over the open sea.

Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara

The Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara is a 500-kilometer hiking trail in southwestern Sardinia that goes along the historic mining region of the Iglesiente. The trail is named after Santa Barbara, the patron saint of miners. The long distance trail connects abandoned mines, ancient villages, rough coastlines, and pristine landscapes. It gives hikers a unique mix of history, culture, and nature. It is divided into 30 stages, each revealing a different aspect of Sardinia’s mining heritage and natural beauty. The first three stages of the trail are around Nebida and Masua.

Tappa 1: Iglesias to Nebida

Distance: ~22 km

Duration: 6–7 hours

Difficulty: Medium

The first stage of the Cammino begins in Iglesias, once the heart of Sardinia’s mining activity. Hikers pass through a landscape marked by abandoned mining sites and Mediterranean vegetation before reaching the coastal village of Nebida. Along the way, walkers get their first sight of the Laveria Lamarmora and the cliffs overlooking the Pan di Zucchero sea stack.

Tappa 2: Nebida to Masua

Distance: ~9 km

Duration: 3–4 hours

Difficulty: Easy

This stage follows a spectacular coastal path connecting Nebida to Masua, with scenic sea views and cliffs. The hike highlights the close connection between nature and industrial history, passing the ruins of mining settlements and panoramic viewpoints. Arriving in Masua, hikers are rewarded with views of the Pan di Zucchero and the chance to visit Porto Flavia.

Tappa 3: Masua to Buggerru

Distance: ~17 km

Duration: 6-7 hours

Difficulty: Challenging

The third stage is one of the most scenic and challenging sections. Hikers start at Spiaggia di Masua to the seaside town of Buggerru. The trail combines dramatic cliffside paths with quiet stretches through Mediterranean scrubland. This tappa is known for breathtaking views of Sardinia’s coastline. Buggerru was also a thriving mining town. On this trail you pass through the beautiful Spiaggia di Cala Domestica which is surrounded by impressive cliffs.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Nebida and Masua is during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October).

• Sea & nature: The Mediterranean waters are warmer in late spring and early autumn, ideal for swimming or kayaking near the Pan di Zucchero sea stack, and the surrounding green landscapes

Summer (July–August) can be hot and crowded, especially on weekends, while winter (November–March) is quieter. Keep in mind that some accommodations or restaurants may have limited services, and the weather can be cooler and rainy.

How to get there

Nebida and Masua are located on Sardinia’s southwestern coast, along the scenic Iglesiente Mining Coast. The nearest towns are Iglesias (12 km from Nebida) and Carbonia (25 km from Nebida), both of which are easily reachable by car or public transport. From Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital (about 80 km away), travellers can take a regional train or bus to Iglesias or Carbonia and then continue by local bus or taxi to Nebida and Masua.

Driving is the most convenient option, allowing you to explore the coastline, mining sites and caves in the area at you own pace. For those relying on public transport, ARST buses connect Iglesias and Carbonia to coastal villages. Bus timings can be limited, so planning ahead is recommended. Once in Nebida or Masua, many hiking trails, beaches, and historic sites are within walking distance, making the villages an ideal base for exploring the area.

Highlights in Italy

Italy has many monumental cities that are worth a visit. Trento is a city of Renaissance charm and Alpine heritage. The city has many monumental highlights to visit such as the cathedral and the Castello del Buonconsiglio. Verona is famous for the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and beautiful medieval streets.

The city of Venice is world famous for its canals, magnificent palaces, and the iconic Piazza San Marco. But Venice has more to offer. The nearby lagoons of Venice are perfect to visit on a day trip. Bologna is known as the food capital of Italy. The city comes with medieval towers, beautiful arcades, and historical landmarks like the Basilica di San Petronio.

Also Padova is well worth a visit with its stunning medieval squares and Scrovegni Chapel. If you are travelling towards Slovenia, don’t forget to visit Trieste. This beautiful city is located at the Adriatic Sea and combines history, architecture and culture with a maritime feel. Other destinations to keep in mind are Florence, Udine and Torino.
